Hi Reader,
Today I want to share some tips to help you maximise how much food you can grow in your container gardens. Growing food in containers is not just great for small spaces or urban gardens but there are so many benefits to growing edibles in pots and containers!
Containers gardens can be great to...
🌱 STACK - Use variations of height and growth styles to stack plants in space. This can mean growing cascading plants at the front, root crops, taller upright plants in the middle and vining or climbing plants up a trellis at the back. Utilising different levels of the soil and space to grow more food.
🌱 PRUNE - Pruning plants such as herbs and flowers will often promote more growth. This means you will get more regular harvests of delicious fresh herbs.
🌱 DRAINAGE - Adequate drainage is so important in container gardens. You don't want excess water sitting at the base of the container rotting the structure or the plants roots.
🌱 WATER - Keep your container gardens well hydrated especially on hot days. Dig your fingers under the surface of the soil to see if it is dry or still holding moisture.
🌱 REPLENISH - Add fresh compost and nutrients into your pots and containers to replenish the limited amount of nutrients available. The change of season is often a good time for this.
🌱 INTEGRATE - Having worm towers or in-ground compost set ups and help create sustainable systems to continuously feed and nourish your soil.
🌱 DIVERSITY - Growing a diverse range of different edibles in each container will help reduce the risk of getting severe nutrient depletion and pest infestations.
🌱 PLANT SELECTION - Choosing dwarf fruit trees or more prolific varieties will help you maximise production in a small space. Dwarf fruit trees are grafted on to root stock that keeps the plant small but still allows the tree to produce abundant harvests.
